A Pair of Red Painted Chinoiserie Armchairs

A Pair of Red Painted Chinoiserie Armchairs

$12,000.00

This enchanting pair of early 20th-century red-painted chinoiserie armchairs showcases exceptional craftsmanship and artistic detailing. Hand-painted scenic panels depict idyllic landscapes, pagodas, and floral motifs, all rendered in a rich black and gold palette that contrasts beautifully against the vibrant red frames. Intricate fretwork and pierced geometric detailing throughout the backrest, arms, and base emphasize the ornate chinoiserie style. Newly upholstered in an Etro fabric.

These armchairs were originally part of a seven-piece salon suite that included a settee and four stools. The suite belonged to the collection of William L. Bernhard and Catherine Cahill, whose Southampton, New York estate reflected their passion for elegant and historic design. Catherine Cahill, the daughter of prominent attorney John T. Cahill, was a noted animal rights activist. William L. Bernhard, a philanthropist and descendant of the Lehman banking family, is recognized for his involvement in the arts and cultural institutions.
